Look Through, Look Within

Charlotte Perkins’ “The Yellow Wallpaper” depicts the protagonist’s fixation on the wallpaper as a metaphor for her mental unraveling. The intricate patterns and hidden figures within the wallpaper mirror the complexities of her own mind, offering visual representations of her internal struggles. This connection between her emotional state and the seemingly lifeless patterns on the wallpaper underscore the profound impact of mental health on one’s perception of the surrounding world, turning ordinary subjects into mirrors of inner strife.

Seeing one’s internal struggles reflected in inanimate objects is seemingly surreal but common phenomenon. Our mental state alters our perception of the physical world around us, blurring the lines between the tangible and intangible.

For this project, I would like explore this phenomenon by creating a wallpaper design drawing inspiration from the use of symbolism in “The Yellow Wallpaper”, as well as from personal experiences.
The creative process I choose to work with is repeat pattern making and printing.
